Longer encounters with chimpanzees and gorillas

This five-day safari is designed for travellers who want habituation experiences in Kibale and Bwindi rather than standard trekking. Both experiences allow longer permitted viewing sessions with ranger-led habituation teams. Golden monkeys are not included in this itinerary.

Normal trekking allows up to one hour with the located primates; habituation allows up to four hours of viewing under Uganda Wildlife Authority guidelines. Forest walking and searching take additional time. The ranger team controls the activity, and permits and sightings remain subject to park arrangements.

Itinerary at a glance

Day 1: Entebbe or Kampala to Kibale. Day 2: Chimpanzee habituation. Day 3: Transfer to Bwindi. Day 4: Gorilla habituation. Day 5: Return to Entebbe.

Day 1: Transfer to Kibale

Begin the road transfer from Entebbe or Kampala to Kibale and check into your lodge. There is no dedicated arrival night within these five days. Arrive in Uganda the previous day, or agree an early arrival and transfer plan with Firante before booking.

Day 2: Chimpanzee habituation in Kibale

Join the ranger-led habituation team after the briefing. Follow the chimpanzees through the forest and observe their movements and behaviour within the permitted viewing period. Allow the day for the forest activity and return to your lodge afterwards. Habituation offers up to four hours of viewing; it does not promise continuous all-day contact.

Day 3: Transfer to the Bwindi habituation sector

Travel to the Bwindi sector offering the confirmed gorilla habituation permit. Your lodge must be selected to suit that permit location. Rest and prepare for the next morning’s forest activity.

Day 4: Gorilla habituation in Bwindi

Attend the briefing and enter the forest with the authorised team. The experience offers up to four hours of permitted viewing with a family undergoing habituation. Walking and searching take additional time and require a suitable level of fitness. Follow the ranger team’s instructions throughout and return to your lodge after the activity.

Day 5: Return to Entebbe

After breakfast, begin the long road transfer to Entebbe or Kampala. No additional primate activity is scheduled today. An Entebbe overnight after the transfer is recommended if an onward flight cannot accommodate delays; this extra night is quoted separately.

How this differs from the other primate trips

The five-day standard trekking safari offers shorter viewing sessions, an Entebbe arrival night and a Kigali finish. This habituation tour begins with the transfer to Kibale on Day 1 and returns to Entebbe. Choose the six-day triple primate habituation safari to add golden monkeys, or the seven-day version for the additional arrival night.

Existing mid-range rates per person

The published starting price corresponds to the six-person column. These rates require reconfirmation for your dates and room arrangements. Your quotation must specify chimpanzee and gorilla habituation permits, which are different from standard trekking permits.

Accommodation, meals and quotation

Your written quotation will confirm the lodges, room arrangements, meal plan, permits, transport, scheduled activities and any optional extras. The final rate depends on your travel dates, group size and accommodation choice. Additional nights before or after the itinerary can be quoted separately.

What is included

Private road transport with a driver-guide, the scheduled overnight stays, meals and drinking water as confirmed in your quotation, and the permits and activities specified for this itinerary. International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, personal purchases and optional activities are excluded unless expressly stated otherwise.
