What Does a Uganda Gorilla Safari Really Cost?
October 22, 2026Uganda or Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking?
Choosing Uganda or Rwanda for gorilla trekking? Start with your budget, arrival airport and the safari you want around the forest encounter.
By the Firante Gorilla Treks team · Planning information checked 29 October 2026. Permit figures below are per person, in US dollars, for the stated visitor category.
The quick answer: Uganda is often the stronger starting point when permit cost and a longer wildlife safari matter most. Rwanda is worth considering when you want a compact gorilla trip from Kigali. Both offer mountain gorilla trekking; neither guarantees an easier walk or a better sighting. Compare the whole itinerary before choosing.
If you are deciding between Uganda and Rwanda for gorilla trekking, start with three questions: where will you arrive, how many days do you have, and what else would you like to experience? A lower permit price can be attractive, but extra transfers, lodge nights or flights can change the final bill.
This guide compares standard gorilla trekking. Uganda’s gorilla habituation experience is a separate activity with its own permit, conditions and price.

Which country costs less for gorilla trekking?
For the standard foreign visitor categories above, the permit difference is $700 per person. That makes Uganda a useful place to begin a cost-conscious comparison. It does not mean every Uganda safari costs less than every Rwanda safari.
Ask for two quotations using the same number of nights, room-sharing arrangements and comfort level. Check permits, meals, airport transfers, vehicle costs, additional activities and any domestic flights. A solo traveller using a private vehicle will have a different per-person price from a couple sharing one.
UWA’s 26 February 2026 notice lists a $600 foreign non-resident gorilla tracking rate in April, May and November and states that low-season permits cannot be rescheduled. Its revised tariff from 1 January 2027 retains the $800 standard foreign non-resident gorilla tracking rate. Discounts should therefore be checked against your exact dates and conditions, rather than treated as an all-year price.

Which option works best when time is short?
Rwanda’s Kigali–Volcanoes combination is a practical starting point for a short gorilla-focused journey. Plan to sleep near your trekking base before the activity rather than depend on an international arrival and a trek on the same morning.
Uganda needs more careful route planning when you arrive through Entebbe. A road journey to Bwindi can occupy a substantial part of the trip. Flights to a regional airstrip can reduce driving, but you still need lodge transfers and an allowance for flight schedules.
A third option is a Uganda trek starting in Kigali. Our 3-day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali is worth comparing with a Rwanda trek. You still cross an international border: confirm entry requirements for both countries, border arrangements and the exact Bwindi sector. Landing in Rwanda does not mean your gorilla permit is for Rwanda.

Is gorilla trekking easier in Rwanda or Uganda?
There is no reliable country-wide promise of an easy trek. Gorilla movements, the assigned family, rainfall and the day’s route affect the walk. A higher permit price does not buy a shorter hike.
UWA identifies four main Bwindi sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. These are separate planning bases, so choose accommodation around the booked sector. In Rwanda, Volcanoes treks can involve sustained climbing at altitude. In either country, allow time for the return walk as well as the approach.
Tell the planning team about your walking ability and any assistance you may need before booking. Ask about porters and practical support, while recognising that the park controls allocation and conditions. Wear suitable walking footwear, carry rain protection and follow the ranger’s briefing.

What would you like to do beyond the gorillas?
Choose a broader Uganda wildlife route
If you want chimpanzees and game viewing as well as a gorilla trek, compare the 7-day Uganda Wildlife Safari with the longer 10-day Uganda Safari with Gorillas, Chimps and Big Five. The extra days help separate travel from activities instead of fitting everything around one forest visit.
Shoebill outings can also be discussed as part of a Uganda route. Treat them as a separate wetland activity with its own timing and conditions, not something included in every gorilla trek. Explore our birding and shoebill options.
Build a Rwanda journey around Volcanoes
For a short gorilla-focused visit, start with the 3-day Rwanda Gorilla Safari. If savannah wildlife matters too, compare the 5-day Rwanda Big Five and Gorilla Safari, combining Akagera and Volcanoes. Nyungwe and Lake Kivu are further possibilities when your schedule allows.
For a cross-border primate journey, consider the 6-day Rwanda–Uganda Primate Safari. Compare the daily route and included permits, rather than assuming that visiting two countries automatically gives you two gorilla treks.
Questions travellers ask
Will I see the same kind of gorilla in both countries?
Yes. Both destinations offer mountain gorilla trekking. The surroundings and individual families differ; the price difference is not a choice between two gorilla species.
Can children join a gorilla trek?
The standard minimum trekking age is 15 in both countries. Families with younger children should arrange suitable alternative activities and childcare separately before booking.
Can I guarantee a gorilla sighting?
No wildlife sighting should be sold as guaranteed. Rangers and trackers organise the experience, but the animals move freely and park conditions can change.
Should I book my lodge or permit first?
Check the permit and suitable accommodation together. In Bwindi especially, a lodge in the wrong sector can create a difficult trek-morning transfer. Ask for written confirmation of the date, location and inclusions before committing to the rest of the trip.
